Give a little, change a lot

…that was this year’s theme for National Volunteer Week 2018, held 21-27 May.

National Volunteer Week is an annual celebration that acknowledges the generous contribution of our nation’s volunteers.

The Invictus Games Sydney 2018 will need the support of approximately 1000 volunteers and our first recruits are already making a difference.

40 eager Nation Liaison Officers, or NLO’s, will play an important role in the lead-up to and during the Games.  They’ll be the first point of contact for our Participating Nations, offering support and assistance to the Nations as they make the trip Down Under.

It’s an important position and our volunteers have hit the ground running, taking part in a series of training sessions.

Sue Taylor, an NLO for Team UK, says her family’s military connection will serve her well in the role.

“My father, brother, grandfather, uncles and father-in-law have all served across various conflicts and I have two nephews still serving,” said Sue.

“Years ago, my husband was in the Army, but an injury sustained in training cut that career short, resulting in numerous operations and an artificial knee. As a family, we have gone through this together, so I have an understanding of the frustrations and the hard work needed both mentally and physically.”

Sue volunteers to keep herself active and connected to the community.

“I get enjoyment from being part of the fun and contributing to the smooth running of the event. (I like to) make sure everyone has a good time and make happy memories.”

“Sydney is also my home town and I would love the opportunity to show it off to visitors.”

We look forward to sharing more volunteer stories in the lead up to the Invictus Games Sydney 2018.
