Fast 5 Q&A with Hamish Blake

Our newest Ambassador Hamish Blake tells us why he is so passionate about supporting veterans, why all Australians should support our wounded warriors and what event he is most excited to watch at Invictus Games Sydney 2018.

1. We’re delighted to have you on board as an Ambassador. Why are you proud to support the Invictus Games?

I think it’s an awesome movement that not only provides a great experience for defence personnel and veterans but allows the public to show tangible support for veterans which I think there is a real want to do, we just often don’t know how

2. You’re a passionate advocate for veterans. What does this mean for you personally?

I was profoundly changed by a trip we took to Afghanistan in 2008. It was my first real experience properly interacting with defence personnel and saw first-hand the incredible work they do.

3. Why should Australians get behind the Games and support our wounded warriors?

It’s an awesome chance to show our appreciation and support to people who, quite frankly, have risked their lives to support our country! Also, the spirit of the event is awesome.

4. What about Invictus Games Sydney 2018 gets you most excited?

I reckon the fact that more than any other event, the act of spectating and supporting is so integral. The Games are all about showing the competitors that they have the support of the country they sacrificed for. This makes the start line a celebration, not the finish line. I love that aspect.

5. What sport are you most excited to watch?

I’m secretly an indoor rowing nerd. I’m pumped that it’s an actual event. We’re an odd bunch, people who sit on ergos and stare at those numbers on the screen, but I’ll be watching keenly!
