Fast 5 with Dominic Reid OBE

A former army officer and architect, Dominic Reid OBE was responsible for the operational delivery of the Invictus Games in London 2014.  Now as Managing Director of the Invictus Games Foundation, Dominic leads a team that promotes the importance of sport and physical activity in the rehabilitation journey of wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans.

1. Dominic, you’ve been a part of the Invictus Games since the inaugural event in 2014. Describe the first time you, a former army officer with a passion for working on major events, heard about (the concept for) the Games?

I took a call from Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, the Prince’s former Private Secretary, who told me about Prince Harry’s great idea and asked if I would like to help bring it into being.

2. What separates the Invictus Games from other major sporting events?

The Invictus Games is about participation, not winning. Of course winning is important, but the approach is different to that of a normal sporting event. For Invictus Games competitors the significant victory is reaching the starting line, rather than the finish line. And occasionally you will see competitors reaching the finish line together. It is very special.

3. The theme for Invictus Games Sydney 2018 is ‘Embrace’. What is a simple action you feel everyone could perform in their own lives to support our wounded, injured and ill and their family and friends?

Acknowledge people for their contribution and service. Everyone from your own friends and family through to those who have served and been wounded. By speaking with them, embracing them or doing something special to contribute to their daily lives and their journey.

4. How important is it for the community to embrace and recognise our veterans and service people beyond special occasions like ANZAC Day and Armed Forces Day?

It is very important, people should be valued. The service, and in some cases sacrifice, made by veterans and servicemen and women should be afforded special recognition. The Invictus spirit is marked by strong mutual respect.

5. You travelled Down Under in June to attend the Official Launch, what about Invictus Games Sydney 2018 are you most looking forward to?

I think that the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 will have the most incredible atmosphere. Sydney is a spectacular host city and the welcome and enthusiasm of Australians is going to make it really special. I can’t wait!
