Adrian Talbot represented Australia at Invictus Games London 2014, describing the experience as life-changing. As an Invictus Games Sydney 2018 ClubsNSW ambassador, Talbot is sharing his Games experience to members of the Clubs community, championing support of our defence service personnel and encouraging all of Sydney and Australia to support the Games in 2018.
1.Describe your Invictus Games experience.
The Invictus Games was a life changing experience for me. It made me realise when you think you are going through your recovery alone, in fact you are not. Many other veterans and their families are living similar experiences and overcoming obstacles. When we all arrived in London it was staggering to see the support from the public.
2.What sports do you enjoy participating in and how has sport helped you overcome difficult moments in your life?
I competed in cycling and swimming at Invictus Games London 2014. I was asked to compete in cycling the day before the event, let’s just say I managed to finish the race but I wasn’t very competitive. From a personal perspective, cycling was a fundamental part of my personal rehabilitation so competing in an international event was really exciting and the crowd at the track were positive and supportive of all competitors.
Swimming was also a major part of my rehabilitation. This was the only sport I could participate in for a major period during my personal recovery pathway. I was fortunate enough to win two gold medals in the pool at the London Games, the 50 metre freestyle and the 50 metre breaststroke.
3.How is ClubsNSW getting involved in Invictus Games Sydney 2018?
ClubsNSW is a founding partner of Invictus Games Sydney 2018. ClubsNSW supports veterans and their families at a community level. For example, my local club supports veterans and their families who are experiencing hardship by assisting with their personal claims with the Department of Veterans Affairs and welfare support. This varies with all individuals as needs are so incredibly different. ClubsNSW also supports Homes for Heroes, on organisation that provides housing and holistic support to veterans and their families who are experiencing homelessness. They also provide support to veterans who are potentially going to compete at Invictus Games by way of access to the and local sports amenities.
4.How would you encourage people to support our wounded, injured and ill servicemen and women?
Talk to your local Clubs about how you can get involved. The Invictus Games gives the community an opportunity to show thanks to veterans for their service. Much of service life is secret and rarely celebrated and The Games gives the community an opportunity to support those who have given so much for our countries.
5.What about Invictus Games Sydney 2018 gets you most excited?
Invictus Games Sydney 2018 is in my home city! The amazing spirit of the Games is coming to one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The Sydney community and the world get to honour and pay tribute to veterans in this wonderful city.
