The marriage of mateship and sport will be the legacy of the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 presented by Jaguar Land Rover, according to the Governor of New South Wales David Hurley.
On the sideline of the archery on Thursday, he applauded the friendship the competitors from the 18 nations had shown on the sporting field.
“Everyone is trying their utmost to perform well,” said Governor Hurley.
Hard work has brought them to this point and you can see the concentration and effort.
“Underneath that, there is enormous camaraderie across the board; ‘I’ll do my best, but I’ll help the next guy as well, if they are struggling’.”
Sydneysiders have thrown their support behind the Invictus Games with many saying the spirit of the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games has returned to the city.
Governor Hurley is proud to see so many locals filling the stands and cheering on all teams, as well as volunteers assisting and running the sporting event.
He said it sent a very clear message of support to those servicemen and women impacted by military service.
“There has been tremendous support from the people of Sydney here at the Games,” said Governor Hurley.
“For the competitors, and their families and supporters, it shows people are really behind and want them to do well, not just here, but also in the future.
“Volunteers are essential, they are our lifeblood. Big events like this – you just couldn’t run them.
“It is important to acknowledge the sporting associations who have provided the technical volunteers – we are very grateful, we really couldn’t run it without them.”
