Colin Hay and The Kingdom Choir will join multiple ARIA award-winning band Birds of Tokyo and Grammy-nominated singer Aloe Blacc to perform at the Closing Ceremony of the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 presented by Jaguar Land Rover at Qudos Bank Arena on 27 October.
Best known as the lead vocalist of Australian band Men at Work, Colin Hay has received continued accolades for his troubadour-style solo performances. Fresh from touring the world as part of Ringo Starr and the All Starr Band, the past ten years have found him introducing himself to a new generation of fans with the frequent use of his music in TV and film, including hit shows such as Scrubs.
Formed of individual singers and performers from in and around England, The Kingdom Choir is a group of likeminded artists dedicated to creating a sound that demonstrates the community they share. Their united sound, warm energy and enthusiastic performance earned them the honour of performing at the recent wedding of Their Royal Highnesses, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
“The choir and I are super excited to be going to Australia to sing at the Invictus Games later this month,” said conductor Karen Gibson. “We love what the Games stand for and are privileged to be able to honour the men and women competing.
“Many of us have never been to Australia before and so that’s an added bonus for us. We literally can’t wait.”
Invictus Games Sydney 2018 Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Kidd OBE, says the organisers are thrilled to have secured an exciting line-up so close the Games.
“The Invictus Games Sydney 2018 Closing Ceremony will be a chance to acknowledge and celebrate the tremendous achievements of the competitors, their family and friends,” Kidd said. “Not only for all they have achieved throughout an incredible week of sporting competition, but for all they have overcome on their individual recovery journeys.
“We are very proud to have some of the best home-grown Australian talent and international acts on board to help them celebrate a fantastic week.”
Twelve thousand people are expected to attend the Closing Ceremony including competitors, family and friends and a host of special guests.
NAIDOC award-winner CHRIS TAMWOY and the Admiral’s Band and Drum Corps will also perform at Qudos Bank Arena.
Founded by The Duke of Sussex in 2014, the Invictus Games is an international adaptive sporting event for wounded, injured and ill service men and women, both active duty and veteran. The Games use the healing power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and celebrate the crucial role played by family and friends.
In a statement released overnight Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed they will attend a number of events across the course of the Games. The Duke is the Patron of the Invictus Games Foundation.
“The Duke and Duchess are excited to see Sydney fully embrace the Invictus spirit, and to support the competitors as they compete across a range of sports at some of the city’s most iconic venues. This year’s Games will emphasise the integral role played by servicemen and women’s family and friends, and Their Royal Highnesses will spend time with a number of the competitors’ supporters as they cheer them on from the side-lines.”
The fourth Invictus Games will be held in Sydney from 20-27 October 2018. 500 competitors from 18 nations will compete in 11 medal sports with events being staged across Greater Sydney, including at Sydney Olympic Park and on and around Sydney Harbour.
